- Specialty Fasteners: Designed for specific roofing applications, such as fasteners for solar panel mounts.
Important Considerations Before Buying:
- Material Compatibility: Ensure the fastener material is compatible with your roofing material to prevent corrosion. For example, galvanized steel fasteners can cause corrosion when used with aluminum roofing, and should never be used with copper flashing (a common mistake made by inexperienced roofers).
- Length and Size: The fastener must be long enough to penetrate the roofing material and the sheathing beneath adequately, but not so long that it damages or interferes with interior building components.
- Type of Roof: The choice of fasteners can depend on the type of roof you have. Sloped roofs have far different fastening requirements than flat roofs. Very long-lasting roofing materials such as slate should use very long-lasting fastener materials such as copper. We’ve seen many premature tile roof failures due to the use of cheap galvanized steel fasteners that failed long before the roof tiles would have.
- Environmental Conditions: Consider the local climate. Areas with high humidity or coastal regions might require corrosion-resistant fasteners like stainless steel or copper.
- Building Codes and Manufacturer’s Recommendations: Always adhere to local building codes and the roofing material manufacturer’s recommendations for fasteners. Roofing fasteners should meet these standards at the very least.
