Roofing fasteners are specialized hardware used to secure roofing materials to the underlying roof deck (or sheathing). Roofing fasteners are an absolutely vital component in the overall integrity and durability of a roofing system. They ensure that materials stay in place despite harsh weather conditions, such as wind, rain, and snow. The proper fasteners, properly installed, will help prevent leaks and other roof issues, as well as reduce the chances of catastrophic roof failure during hurricanes and other wind events.

Types of Roofing Fasteners:

  1. Nails: The most common type of roofing fasteners, available in various lengths and made from different materials such as galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and copper. Specific types include ring shank nails, which provide extra holding power.
  2. Screws: Used for metal and some types of tile roofing, screws offer more holding power than nails and are often used where high wind uplift resistance is required. They can be self-tapping and may come with polymer or rubber washers to ensure a watertight seal.
  3. Staples: Not recommended for use with shingles due to their much lower holding power compared to nails and screws. They are used in roofing today primarily for attaching roofing felt or other roof underlayment.
  4. Rivet Fasteners: Mainly used for metal roofing systems or the metal perimeter components of low-slope roof systems, rivets are often used to join metal panels or sheets or to attach metal to perimeter walls.
  5. Specialty Fasteners: Designed for specific roofing applications, such as fasteners for solar panel mounts.

Important Considerations Before Buying:

  1. Material Compatibility: Ensure the fastener material is compatible with your roofing material to prevent corrosion. For example, galvanized steel fasteners can cause corrosion when used with aluminum roofing, and should never be used with copper flashing (a common mistake made by inexperienced roofers).
  2. Length and Size: The fastener must be long enough to penetrate the roofing material and the sheathing beneath adequately, but not so long that it damages or interferes with interior building components.
  3. Type of Roof: The choice of fasteners can depend on the type of roof you have. Sloped roofs have far different fastening requirements than flat roofs. Very long-lasting roofing materials such as slate should use very long-lasting fastener materials such as copper. We’ve seen many premature tile roof failures due to the use of cheap galvanized steel fasteners that failed long before the roof tiles would have.
  4. Environmental Conditions: Consider the local climate. Areas with high humidity or coastal regions might require corrosion-resistant fasteners like stainless steel or copper.
  5. Building Codes and Manufacturer’s Recommendations: Always adhere to local building codes and the roofing material manufacturer’s recommendations for fasteners. Roofing fasteners should meet these standards at the very least.

Importance of a Good Fastener Manufacturer:

  1. Quality Assurance: A reputable manufacturer ensures their fasteners meet industry standards and are made from high-quality materials, providing reliability and longevity. Especially with galvanized steel, you want a reputable manufacturer with high quality standards for their manufacturing processes.
  2. Product Range: Established manufacturers usually offer a wider range of fasteners suitable for various roofing materials and applications.
  3. Technical Support: Good manufacturers provide technical support and guidance; they have technical departments who will help you choose the right fasteners for your specific needs and will explain the correct installation methods.
  4. Warranty and Compliance: Products from a reputable manufacturer often come with warranties and will be in compliance with building codes and other standards.

Selecting the right roofing fasteners and a reputable manufacturer will help improve the service life and performance of your roofing system. It’s worth investing a little time to get this right.
