Rain gutters are narrow fabricated channels or troughs that are normally installed along the edges of roofs to catch and divert rainwater away from a building. They are part of a building’s “storm drainage” system, conveying water from the roof to a downspout, which takes the water to an appropriate discharge location away from the building. This helps protect the building’s structure and foundation from water damage.

Gutters are made from various materials, including aluminum (typically coated or painted), copper, steel (various types, typically coated or painted), vinyl (PVC), or zinc. You will even occasionally find gutters made out of wood (with a waterproof lining), although section 1502.3 of the International Building Code states that gutters must be made out of noncombustible materials.

Rain gutters are important for several reasons:

  1. Preventing Water Damage: By directing water away from the building, gutters help prevent water from seeping into basements or crawl spaces, which can lead to mold, mildew, and other water-related damages.
  2. Protecting the Foundation: The pressure of water concentrated in the soil around the foundation can weaken it, leading to structural damage over time. Gutters help keep the areas adjacent to foundations relatively dry and stable.
  3. Preventing Soil Erosion: Without gutters, rainwater falling directly off the roof can erode the soil around the building, ruining landscaping and leading to foundation exposure and vulnerability.
  4. Preventing Siding Damage: Rainwater that runs straight down the side of a building can also damage the siding, causing staining, rot, warping, and other deterioration over time.

Finding a good rain gutter manufacturer is critical for several reasons:

  1. Quality Materials: A reputable manufacturer will use high-quality materials that can better withstand weather conditions, from heavy rain to constant sunlight (constant UV exposure), and resist corrosion and wear over time.
  2. Proper Design: Gutters come in various shapes, sizes, and styles. A good manufacturer can tell you what type of gutters you need and provide options that not only function well but also complement the architectural style of your home or building.
  3. Durability: High-quality gutters from a reputable manufacturer will last longer and require less maintenance, which will save you money and hassle over the long term.
  4. Warranty and Support: Reputable manufacturers often offer warranties on their products and customer support for installation and maintenance issues, so you can get help when you need it.
  5. Innovation: Good manufacturers keep up with industry advancements, offering the latest in gutter technology.
