EPDM Roofing Manufacturers
An epdm roof replacement in progress

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) roof membranes are a type of synthetic rubber single-ply roofing material widely used on the flat (low-slope) roofs found on commercial buildings.

EPDM is the second most popular type of single-ply roofing in North America today. EPDM is a durable, waterproof, elastomeric, and highly flexible membrane material which is well-suited for use as a single-ply roofing material for many reasons.

Key Properties of EPDM Roof Membranes:

  1. Durability: EPDM roofs are known for their resistance to weathering, UV radiation, extreme temperatures, and even some acids, alkalis, and alcohol. This makes them highly durable, with a typical lifespan of around 25 to 30 years. but capable of lasting up to 50 years with proper maintenance under the right conditions.
  2. Flexibility: The rubber material is highly elastomeric and remains flexible in cold temperatures, which allows it to adapt to building movements and temperature fluctuations without cracking or splitting.
  3. Waterproofing: EPDM membranes are exceptionally resistant to water (most issues are due to failures at the seams where sections of the membrane are joined together with tape or adhesives).
  4. Eco-Friendly: Unlike PVC or asphalt roofing membranes, for example, EPDM membranes do not contain chlorine or other volatiles that can damage the local environment. They can also be partially recycled at the end of their lifecycle, and their installation and manufacturing processes are generally considered to be more environmentally friendly than some other roofing options.

Importance of Choosing a Reputable EPDM Manufacturer:

  1. Quality of Material: A reputable manufacturer will ensure that the EPDM membrane is of high quality, which directly affects its durability and performance.
  2. Warranty and Support: Established manufacturers will usually offer better warranties and customer support. This can be very important if you need to deal with any issues that might arise during or after installation.
  3. Product Range: A good manufacturer will provide a range of related EPDM products, including membranes in various thicknesses, allowing for a more tailored solution to your specific roofing needs.
  4. Technical Expertise: Established EPDM roofing manufacturers have the expertise to provide guidance on the best practices for installation, maintenance, and repair, which can help you get the most out of your roof.
  5. Qualified Contractors: Reputable EPDM roofing manufacturers will typically only sell their products to roofing contractors that they have trained or examined and will provide you with a list of approved, certified contractors in your area.
  6. Compliance with Standards: Reputable manufacturers adhere to industry standards and regulations, ensuring that the EPDM membrane meets safety and performance criteria.

Spending a little time researching reputable EPDM roofing manufacturers with proven track records is a good first step before you have an EPDM roof installed.
